When I "Archive" emails from my Exchange server account in Mail (Mac), do they stay on the server?
My Exchange server email account is a little full. So in Mail I'm trying to take emails off the server and just store them locally on my Macbook Pro. So my instinct is to right-click on the emails and click Archive. But under the "Help" topic "Archive messages in Mail", it says "Depending on the account type, the Archive mailbox is stored on the mail server." Is this the case for my account type? I am using Exchange Server 2007.

Hi, Archive Mailboxes is a feature in Exchange 2010. So in other words, if you enable Archive in "Mail" you will move messages off the Server and store them locally.Martina Miskovic

Thanks but I am using Exchange 2007. I tried right-clicking on emails in Mail and selecting "Archive", and it seemed to work. But when I logged into my OWA I saw that under my inbox a new folder had been created called Archive on the server and my emails were moved there - so still on the server. Hmmm. Advice truly appreciated.

Hi, I don't know how "Mail" on Mac works, but from what you describe it seems that it only moves messages to a new created folder. Since that is a client feature and not related to Exchange 2013 (topic of this forum), I suggest that you post in a forum for MAC. Martina Miskovic

Thanks for the advice. This is proving very frustrating because when I called Apple they directed me to call Microsoft's Mac helpdesk for a solution, who then redirected my call to an Microsoft Exchange Server specialist, who then directed me to this forum :-/ Being sent from pillar to post!

I can understand your frustration, but not why Apple thought that Microsoft should answer questions regarding their software. You now know at least that there is no such thing as an Archive Mailbox in Exchange 2007.Martina Miskovic

Thanks for your advice Martina. I expect because it involves both Microsoft Exchange Server and Mail for Mac. Would be great to get some advice from someone who knows how both work?

HI nicholasoakley Martina is correct, Exchange 2007 does not have Archive Mailbox, that is a thing on Exchange 2010, So it must be a function on Mac. In my opinion, the archive you did is from the client side, not the Exchange Server archive, So It might be a client side issue, not related to Exchange. For reference, I found a link about archiving email on MAC, perhaps you can have a try http://guides.macrumors.com/Archiving_E-Mail Hope it will help Cheers Note: Microsoft is providing this information as a convenience to you.
